The 1922 St. Louis Browns are struggling mightily, getting swept for the second straight series, this time at the hands of the 1929 Chicago Cubs. The Cubs have won six of their last seven to improve to 10-6, while the Browns have lost 10 straight and are in the cellar at 3-13.
There have been only a handful of shutouts thus far but Chicago pitcher Guy Bush now has two of them. Hack Wilson batted .571 (8-for-14) to lead the Chicago hitters. Marty McManus and Ken Williams both hit .357 (5-for-14) for St. Louis, which was outscored 21-9.
Game #1: Chicago 9, St. Louis 5
The Cubs went up 3-0 with the help of Hack Wilson’s two-run homer in the third inning. The Browns didn’t have a baserunner in the first three innings, then put up five runs on five hits in the fourth, which included a three-run homer from Hank Severeid. That was it for St. Louis, however. The Cubs tied it on Charlie Grimm’s two-run single in the sixth, went ahead on Hack Wilson’s RBI triple in the seventh, and also got a two-run homer from Rogers Hornsby in the ninth.

The Cubs’ Guy Bush gave up just three hits and one walk, and no St. Louis baserunner made it past first base. The Cubs got both of their runs in the fourth as Norm McMillan had a two-out, two-run double. St. Louis pitcher Ray Kolp earned the unfortunate distinction of dropping to 0-4 after four starts.
