GTOP S2W4: 1930 Cardinals vs. 1927 Pirates

The 1930 St. Louis Cardinals won the opener against the 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates and appeared to have all the momentum against one of the league’s worst teams to that point. But the Pirates (5-7) surprisingly won the next three to put a halt to the recent good run by the Cardinals (8-8).

Lloyd Waner hit .500 (9-for-18) with four RBI for the Pirates. For St. Louis, George Watkins homered twice and Chick Hafey had one, tying them for the league lead with seven apiece after 16 games. Watkins hit .400 (6-for-15) in the series.

Game #1: St. Louis 6, Pittsburgh 2

Jim Bottomley had an RBI single in the first, George Fisher had an RBI double in the third, Sparky Adams had a two-run double and Frankie Frisch had an RBI double in the fourth, and George Watkins had a run-scoring single in the fifth. The Pirates eventually got on the board on Lloyd Waner’s RBI single in the fifth, and he singled and scored in the seventh.

Game #4: Pittsburgh 3, St. Louis 0

The Pirates’ Vic Aldridge shut down the vaunted Cardinals lineup, shutting out St. Louis on a five-hitter. The Cardinals got runners into scoring position in four different innings, including twice to third base, but Aldridge (who is now 3-0 after three starts) stopped them every time. Pittsburgh’s three runs came in the first two innings, as Glenn Wright had an RBI double in the first, and Aldridge had a two-run single in the second.
