GTOP S2W4: 1927 Yankees vs. 1922 Giants

Heading into week four, the 1922 New York Giants had the best winning percentage in the league and the 1927 New York Yankees were right behind. But led by Bob Meusel, the Yanks (12-4) claimed the top spot in the standings with a four-game sweep of the Giants (6-6). All four contests were decided by multiple runs as the Yankees outscored the Giants 27-15.

Meusel homered in each of the four games and drove in 11 runs. Earle Combs was unstoppable, going 12-for-19 (.632) at the plate. The Giants were led by George Kelly’s .400 average (6-for-15). The Yankees outhit the Giants .333 to .266.

Game #1: Yankees 5, Giants 2

Bob Meusel launched a three-run home run in the top of the first inning, a sign of things to come. Lou Gehrig had an RBI double and Meusel had an RBI single in the third to make it 5-1. Earle Combs went 5-for-5 at the plate.

Game #2: Yankees 8, Giants 6

The Giants scored four times in the seventh, which included a solo home run from George Kelly and a two-run double from Dave Bancroft, to take a 6-3 lead. It wasn’t enough. The Yankees scored five times in the top of the ninth, as Meusel led off with a home run, Pat Collins and Mark Koenig had RBI singles and Babe Ruth finished it off with a two-run triple. The comeback win allowed Urban Shocker to improve to 4-0 after four starts despite a rough outing.

Game #3: Yankees 7, Giants 4

The Yankees went up 3-0 in the first, though the Giants tied it at three in the top of the eighth on Frank Snyder’s RBI single. The Yankees regained the lead with four runs in the bottom of the eighth thanks to Bob Meusel’s two-run homer and Mark Koenig’s two-RBI single.

Game #4: Yankees 7, Giants 3

Bob Meusel got things started with another first-inning three-run homer. Tony Lazzeri had an RBI double in a two-run sixth inning that made it 5-0. The Giants closed to within 5-3 after Heinie Groh’s RBI double in the top of the eighth, but the Yankees put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI singles from Earle Combs and Mark Koenig.
