The 1930 St. Louis Cardinals got back on track, while the 1922 New York Giants continued their slide. St. Louis (11-9) took three of four games to move to the right side of .500. After starting the season 6-2, New York (7-9) has won just one of the last eight.
Sparky Adams hit a team-best .389 (7-for-18) for the Cardinals, who should have earned the sweep except for a game two collapse. The Giants’ leading hitter was Frankie Frisch at .294 (5-for-17).
Game #1: St. Louis 7, New York 2
There were fireworks early, as the Cardinals hit three home runs in a four-run second inning. George Watkins had a two-run homer (his league-best eighth of the season) and Charlie Gelbert and Taylor Douthit both had solo shots. It went to 7-0 in the top of the eighth as Gelbert drove in one and Douthit plated two with hits. The Giants at least broke up the shutout in the bottom of the eighth. Burleigh Grimes improved to 4-0 after five starts.

The Cardinals’ Wild Bill Hallahan had a one-hit shutout and had retired 16 straight batters heading into the bottom of the ninth. But New York pinch-hitter Bill Cunningham led off with a double and scored on Dave Bancroft’s single and Frankie Frisch later tied it with an RBI single. In the bottom of the 11th with two out, Heinie Groh doubled and then scored the game-winning run on a Frisch base hit.

Irish Meusel hit a two-run homer for the Giants in the top of the first, but the Cardinals took the lead with single runs in the first three innings, which included a solo homer from Jim Bottomley in the third. The Giants tied it in the top of the seventh, but the Cardinals scored three runs in the seventh and the eighth, two of them unearned. Syl Johnson moved to 4-1 after five starts.

The Cardinals scored all four of their runs in the first three innings, with an RBI single by Chick Hafey in the first, an RBI triple by Sparky Adams in the second and an RBI single from George Watkins in the third. New York had chances, but left runners in scoring position in five different innings. In the top of the ninth, they put runners on second and third with no one out, but could only score once on Bill Cunningham’s sacrifice fly.
