GTOP S2W5: 1927 Yankees vs. 1919 Reds

The 1927 New York Yankees came in as the best team in the league while the 1919 Cincinnati Reds entered as one of the worst. It wasn’t easy, but the Yankees were able to win three out of four, including the last two in one-run contests.

Earle Combs hit a team-best .438 (7-for-16) for the Yankees (15-5), who also got three home runs from Babe Ruth. Ruth now has eight on the season, tied for the league lead. Edd Roush batted .385 (5-for-13) to lead the Reds (4-12).

Game #1: New York 8, Cincinnati 0

Herb Pennock tossed a three-hit shutout and only allowed one runner into scoring position. The Yankees scored in each of the first four innings, including a bases-loaded triple from Bob Meusel in the fourth. Babe Ruth added a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.

Game #2: Cincinnati 10, New York 5

After scoring just nine runs in the previous six games, the Reds somehow exploded for 10 runs on 13 hits. It was tied 2-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth but Cincinnati scored three, two and three runs in its final three at-bats. Greasy Neale led the way with three hits and three RBI. Urban Shocker was vying to become the first 5-0 pitcher but was hit hard. Babe Ruth homered again for the Yankees.

Game #3: New York 5, Cincinnati 4

The Yankees led 4-0 after four innings, with Earle Combs driving in two of the runs. It stayed 4-0 until the eighth, when the Reds scored twice, and they then added two more in the ninth to tie the contest. But in the bottom of the ninth, Joe Dugan led off with a single, and after a Cincinnati error, pinch-hitter Johnny Grabowski ended it with an RBI single.

Game #4: New York 3, Cincinnati 2

Babe Ruth’s third homer of the series gave the Yankees a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. The Reds tied it in the third on Jake Daubert’s two-out RBI single. New York went back in front in the fifth inning thanks to Earle Combs’ two-run home run in the fifth inning. Cincinnati almost put together another ninth-inning comeback, pulling within a run after Larry Kopf’s RBI double, but Waite Hoyt got the final out to improve to 4-1.
