After the 1920 Cleveland Indians swept the 1925 Washington Senators and the 1927 New York Yankees took three of four from the 1919 Cincinnati Reds in week five, that sets up the most consequential series of the season in week six. The Yankees and Indians are tied atop the standings with .750 winning percentages — New York has a one-game lead due to having played four extra games — and those two squads will meet in week number six.
Meanwhile, the 1929 Chicago Cubs, coming off a bye and in third place, will be hoping for a Yankees-Indians split and trying to take advantage in a series against the Senators.
Bob Meusel’s batting average dropped below .400, but he’s still leading the league at .395. Chick Hafey (.378), Lloyd Waner (.375) and Earle Combs (.372) are close. After hitting three home runs against the Reds, Babe Ruth is tied for the league lead at eight with George Watkins.
Interestingly, only two starting pitchers have yet to record a loss: the Cardinals’ Burleigh Grimes (4-0 in five starts) and the Indians’ Ray Caldwell (3-0 in four starts).
