The 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates were victorious in their series against the 1922 New York Giants by virtue of winning the first three games of the series, but all anyone will be talking about is the finale, as the Giants trailed 5-2 in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and no one on base, yet came back to win 6-5 (you can watch this one on the YouTube link below).
Before the amazing comeback, the Pirates (11-9) had won nine of their previous 10, while the Giants (8-12) had lost 10 of their previous 11.
Joe Harris hit .462 (6-for-13) with three extra-base hits to lead Pittsburgh. George Kelly batted .353 (6-for-17) to lead New York.
Game #1: Pittsburgh 3, New York 1
The Giants scored in the top of the first on George Kelly’s RBI single, but that was it. The Pirates tied the game in the sixth on Joe Harris’ home run. In the bottom of the eighth, Glenn Wright had an RBI single and Pie Traynor added an RBI double.

The Giants again led 1-0, but the Pirates tied it in the bottom of the first, then scored four times in the third inning on a pair of two-run singles from Glenn Wright and Clyde Barnhart. The Giants added a solo homer from Irish Meusel in the seventh, but that was it.

Game #3: Pittsburgh 3, New York 2
This time the Giants took a 2-0 lead after two innings on sacrifice flies by Frankie Frisch and Heinie Groh, only to see it erased. The Pirates got a solo homer from Glenn Wright in the fourth. In the eighth, Paul Waner had an RBI double to tie it and Wright followed with a go-ahead run-scoring single. New York got the tying run to third base with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but stranded him there.

Game #4: New York 6, Pittsburgh 5
Again, New York took the lead (2-0 after the first inning). Again, the Pirates went ahead, scoring five runs, including solo homers from Paul Waner and Johnny Gooch. The Giants finally flipped the script in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the ninth after trailing 5-2. After the first two Giant hitters were retired, Dave Bancroft walked. Pittsburgh then strung together five consecutive singles by Casey Stengel, Frankie Frisch, Irish Meusel, George Kelly and Ross Youngs, the last four of which scored runs, with Youngs providing the walk-off victory. Youngs, the right fielders, also threw out a runner at the plate in the eighth inning.
