The 1930 St. Louis Cardinals maintained their place in the top half of the league after taking three of four games from the hapless 1919 Cincinnati Reds. A defensive meltdown in game two prevented the Cardinals from earning a sweep.
Burleigh Grimes stayed perfect and improved to 5-0 after six starts for the Cardinals (14-10) with a game one win, while George Watkins led the way at the plate with a .400 (6-for-15) average with four extra-base hits and five RBI. Cincinnati (5-15) was led by Heinie Groh’s .385 (5-for-13) average.
Game #1: St. Louis 7, Cincinnati 2
The Cardinals’ George Watkins got the scoring started with his (for now) league-best ninth home run of the season in the fourth inning. After Cincinnati tied it at one, St. Louis went back ahead 2-1 in the sixth on Jimmie Wilson’s RBI triple. It was 3-2 going to the bottom of the eighth and the Cardinals broke the game open after two-run doubles from both Taylor Douthit and Frankie Frisch.

Game #2: Cincinnati 8, St. Louis 7
Three St. Louis errors helped Cincinnati score six runs in the top of the first. Heinie Groh and Edd Roush both drove in two runs during the inning. The Reds would end up blowing a six-run lead, as the Cardinals tied the game after seven innings. Chick Hafey had a three-run homer in the sixth, his eighth of the season (he finished a single away from hitting for the cycle). But, the Reds reclaimed the lead in the top of the eighth. With two outs, Greasy Neale doubled and Ivey Wingo had an RBI single, and that turned out to be the winning run.

Game #3: St. Louis 2, Cincinnati 1
George Watkins had a two-out, two-run double in the top of the first inning, and it turned out that would be all the Cardinals would need. An error gave the Reds their only run in the third inning. In the bottom of the ninth, Cincinnati put runners on second and third with one out, but couldn’t bring either home. Syl Johnson improved to 5-1 on the season for the Cardinals.

Game #4: St. Louis 2, Cincinnati 1
The Cardinals won the series with another 2-1 victory. Chick Hafey and George Watkins had back-to-back doubles to score the first run in the second inning. The Reds came right back to tie it in the bottom of the second on Morrie Rath’s RBI double. St. Louis went back in front in the fourth on Charlie Gelbert’s RBI double, which turned out to be the last run of the game. The Reds only got one runner into scoring position in the final seven innings off of Jesse Haines.
