GTOP S2W6: Recap

The 1920 Cleveland Indians were the big winners in week 6, taking three of four games against the 1927 New York Yankees in a showdown between the top two teams in the league.

With the season now two-thirds of the way complete, that sets up a massive week 7, as the top four teams in the league will meet. The Indians will face the fourth-place 1930 St. Louis Cardinals, while the Yankees will square off against the third-place 1929 Chicago Cubs.

The Indians and Cubs have 12 games to play, while the Yankees and Cardinals still have a bye to come, so they have eight games remaining.

All four series in week 6 saw the winning side take three out of four games.

The league leaders have seen some shakeups. The Yankees’ slide saw Bob Meusel and Earle Combs take a dive in the batting average race, and the Pirates’ Lloyd Waner has ascended to the top spot with a .375 average. The Yankees’ Babe Ruth and the Cardinals’ George Watkins each homered once to stay atop that category with nine each. Watkins has also caught up to Meusel for the RBI leaders.

St. Louis pitcher Burleigh Grimes is the last starter without a loss, and his five wins are tied for the best with teammate Syl Johnson and the Yankees’ Waite Hoyt. Four of the 36 starting pitchers have failed to win a game.
