GTOP S2W7: 1927 Pirates vs. 1919 Reds

Late game heroics were aplenty during the series between the 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1919 Cincinnati Reds, and the Pirates had more of them as they won three of the four games. Pittsburgh posted walk-off victories in the ninth inning of both games three and four.

Paul Waner hit .562 (9-for-16) with five RBI for the Pirates (14-10), who saw Lee Meadows and Ray Kremer each win their fourth games of the season. Jake Daubert, the only Cincinnati hitter to bat better than .200, was at .333 (5-for-15). The Reds remain near the cellar at 6-18 overall.

Game #1: Cincinnati 6, Pittsburgh 4

The Pirates were cruising, taking a 2-0 lead to the bottom of the eighth inning, while starting pitcher Carmen Hill had given up only three hits in the first seven innings. But Cincinnati exploded for six runs on five hits in the bottom of the eighth, with RBI singles by Ivey Wingo and Larry Kopf, followed by two-run singles from Sherry Magee and pinch-hitter Bill Rariden. The Pirates got two back in the top of the ninth on Paul Waner’s fourth hit of the day, but it wasn’t enough.

Game #3: Pittsburgh 2, Cincinnati 1

The Reds got a run in the top of the first as Edd Roush doubled and Jake Daubert singled him home, but that would be it. The Pirates finally evened the game in the sixth on Paul Waner’s RBI double. It stayed 1-1 until the bottom of the ninth. Gleen Wright and Pie Traynor reached base with singles, and a walk loaded the bases with no one out. George Grantham ended the contest with an RBI single.

Game #4: Pittsburgh 3, Cincinnati 2

Cincinnati took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on Larry Kopf’s RBI double. That lead stood until the bottom of the ninth. With two on and two out, the Pirates’ Clyde Barnhart hit a ball off the wall that allowed both the tying and winning runs to score. Reds starter Ray Fisher was one out away from his first win of the season but instead fell to 0-6 after six starts.
