GTOP S2W7: 1929 Cubs vs. 1927 Yankees

The second and third-place teams both needed a big showing in their week seven matchup to improve their hopes of overtaking the 1920 Cleveland Indians. Unfortunately for the 1929 Chicago Cubs and the 1927 New York Yankees, they split their four-game series, with the visiting team winning all four contests.

The Yankees are now at 18-10 and have just four games left to play. The Cubs are at 15-9 and have two series remaining.

Bob Meusel broke out of a slump by batting .533 (8-for-15) for the Yankees, who hit .308 as a team in the series and had five home runs. Babe Ruth took over the league lead for the moment with his 10th of the season. Rogers Hornsby batted .353 (6-for-17) and hit three of the Cubs’ seven home runs. Chicago hit just .237 as a team.

Game #1: Chicago 5, New York 4

Five home runs were hit in this one, three by the Cubs, which led to all five of their runs. Rogers Hornsby had a two-run shot in the first inning and Charlie Grimm had a solo shot in the second to make it 3-0. New York went ahead 4-3 in the seventh inning on a Lou Gehrig solo home run. The Cubs regained the lead in the eighth on Hack Wilson’s two-run bomb. Charlie Root pitched 1-2-3 innings in the eighth and ninth to secure the win.

Game #3: New York 9, Chicago 4

The Cubs once again took an early lead, as a two-run homer from Rogers Hornsby made it 3-0 in the third inning. Once again, New York made a comeback, and this one stuck. Among the big hits: Bob Meusel homered in the fourth, Lou Gehrig and Meusel had RBI doubles in the sixth, Tony Lazzeri had an RBI triple in the ninth and Gehrig had a two-run homer in the ninth. The Cubs did have one defensive highlight when Gehrig hit into a triple play in the seventh inning. Amazingly, the Cubs have now turned triple plays in two consecutive series.

The Cubs took a pair of one-run leads after home runs by Kiki Cuyler and Rogers Hornsby. But the Yankees tied it again in the fourth on Bob Meusel’s RBI single, went ahead in the sixth on another RBI single by Meusel, and later added a two-run home run from Babe Ruth in the seventh inning.
