GTOP S2W8: 1922 Browns vs. 1925 Senators

The 1925 Washington Senators broke out broke out of a slump by winning three of four from the last-place 1922 St. Louis Browns. St. Louis (7-21) won the opener, giving Washington its ninth loss in 10 games, but the Senators (13-15) rebounded to win the next three.

Three Washington batters hit better than .400 for the series, led by Sam Rice at .438 (7-for-16). Firpo Marberry had a win and a save in relief. Jack Tobin hit .500 (7-for-14) for the Browns.

Game #1: St. Louis 2, Washington 1

The Browns scratched out single runs in each of the first two innings, and that turned out to be enough behind a great pitching performance from Urban Shocker. Ken Williams had an RBI triple in the first and Hank Severeid and Wally Gerber had back-to-back doubles in the second. Washington got its only run on a solo homer from Goose Goslin in the fourth.

Game #2: Washington 6, St. Louis 5 (10 inn.)

St. Louis led 2-0 and 3-1, but Washington tied it in the bottom of the eighth on two-out RBI singles from Muddy Ruel and Roger Peckinpaugh. St. Louis went back in front with two runs in the top of the 10th on run-scoring singles by George Sisler and Ken Williams. Washington put together a remarkable rally to win the game in the bottom of the 10th. The Senators tied the game on Joe Judge’s two-run single. Then, with the bases loaded and one out, reliever Hub Pruett walked home the winning run.

Game #3: Washington 5, St. Louis 2

The Browns got an early run thanks to Ken Williams’ RBI triple. It stayed 1-0 until the seventh, when the Senators scored four runs. After the first two outs were made, the Senators put two runners on and then got an RBI single from Muddy Ruel. Roger Peckinpaugh slugged a three-run homer to make it 4-1. Bucky Harris added another run in the eighth with an RBI double.
