The 1930 St. Louis Cardinals kept their pennant hopes on life support while dealing a near-fatal blow to the 1929 Chicago Cubs as the Cards took three of four games to close out week 8.
St. Louis has the bye in week 9, so the Cardinals’ season comes to an end with a 19-13 record. They’ll need a miracle to tie for the title, as first-place Cleveland is 19-9 and second-place New York is 18-10. With four games to play, the Cubs (16-12) are now three back of first place and tied with Pittsburgh, who they’ll face in week 9.
Frankie Frisch batted .471 (8-for-17) to lead the Cardinals’ attack. Hack Wilson was the only Cub starter to fare well, batting .400 (6-for-15).
Game #1: St. Louis 4, Chicago 2
The Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the fifth on Riggs Stephenson’s two-run homer. But St. Louis scored twice in the sixth to regain the lead as Chick Hafey had an RBI double and George Watkins had an RBI single. Charlie Gelbert tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single. St. Louis starter Burleigh Grimes won for his seventh time in eight starts and will finish the season as the only starter in the league without a loss.

Game #4: St. Louis 2, Chicago 1
The Cardinals got single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on RBI singles from George Watkins and Sparky Adams, and that would be enough. Chicago would only get a solo home run from Rogers Hornsby in the sixth. The Cubs loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning but Flint Rehm got the final out for his seventh save.
