GTOP S2W9: Gameday #1

After the opening round of games in the final week of the season, the 1920 Cleveland Indians (20-9) took a step closer to the title with a rout of the 1922 New York Giants (14-15). The 1927 New York Yankees (18-11) had a very costly misstep, as they were blown out by the 1925 Washington Senators (14-15) to fall two games back with just three to go.

The 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates (17-12) remain alive thanks to their win over the 1929 Chicago Cubs (16-13), though they are three back with three to play. The Cubs have been eliminated from contention, as have the idle 1930 St. Louis Cardinals (19-13).

The battle for last place began with the 1919 Cincinnati Reds (7-22) beating the 1922 St. Louis Browns (7-22), putting the teams into a tie.

Cleveland 10, New York Giants 5

The Indians scored multiple runs in four of the first six innings en route to a 10-1 lead. Elmer Smith hit a two-run homer and Steve O’Neill drove in four runs. The Giants scored four late runs but were still doubled up. All nine Indian starters had hits — six of them with multi-hit games — as Cleveland finished with 18 hits in all.

Pittsburgh 5, Chicago 4 (10 inn.)

The game went back-and-forth with multiple lead changes. Chicago tied it at 4-4 in the seventh when pitcher Charlie Root tripled with two outs and scored on Norm McMillan’s single. In the eighth, though, the Cubs had the go-ahead run thrown out at home plate. Pittsburgh’s Clyde Barnhart led off the 10th inning with a walk-off home run.

Cincinnati 4, St. Louis Browns 3

The Reds built a 4-0 lead and Sherry Magee drove in three of them, including a two-run single in the top of the sixth. It turned out to be barely enough. The Browns finally got on the board in the seventh on Wally Gerber’s RBI single. They made it a one-run game in the ninth on Baby Doll Jacobson’s two-run double. St. Louis had the tying run on second and the winning run on first with one out, but couldn’t bring them home.
