GTOP S2W9: Gameday #2

The 1920 Cleveland Indians have clinched at least a share of the championship, but blew their chance to win it outright on the second gameday of week 9 as they lost to the 1922 New York Giants.

The only other team in contention, the 1927 New York Yankees, blew their own chance to make a positive move as they lost for the second straight game to the 1925 Washington Senators. The Indians (20-10) lead the Yankees (18-12) by two games with two to play and can now clinch the championship at home as action moves back to Cleveland.

The 1929 Chicago Cubs evened their series with the 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates and both teams are now 17-13 as they battle for fifth place. The 1919 Cincinnati Reds (8-22) beat the 1922 St. Louis Browns (7-23) for the second straight game to push the Browns into the cellar.

New York Giants 5, Cleveland Indians 2

The Indians scored first in the third inning on a double-steal, but the Giants immediately tied it on a Phil Douglas triple and a Frankie Frisch RBI single. It stayed 1-1 until the seventh. New York put up three runs on a Frank Snyder two-run double and a Casey Stengel RBI single. Cleveland cut the deficit to 4-2 in the eighth but New York immediately added an insurance run. Douglas was excellent on the hill for the Giants and improved to 4-2 on the season.

After scoring just one run in each of the first two games of the series, the Yankee offense has disappeared. Walter Johnson largely shut down New York. The Yankees tied the game with their only run in the top of the seventh, but the Senators immediately scored six in the bottom of the seventh behind an RBI single by Bucky Harris, a two-run single by Sam Rice, a two-run double by Joe Judge and an RBI double by Roger Peckinpaugh. Johnson improved to 4-3 on the season.
