The championship of season 2 has been decided, and it’s the 1920 Cleveland Indians that will come out on top. After the Indians again lost to the 1922 New York Giants, the clincher came as a result of the 1927 New York Yankees falling to the 1925 Washington Senators for the third straight game.
The Indians are 20-11 with one game to play. But, there’s still some jockeying for positions two through five.
The 1930 St. Louis Cardinals’ season is complete at 19-13. The Yankees and the 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates, both at 18-13, can climb into a tie for second place with the Cardinals with victories in their season finales. The 1929 Chicago Cubs, who have lost two of three to Pirates and are at 17-14, could finish as high as a tie for third with a win and a Yankee loss.
The Giants and Senators are both 16-15 and will face the Indians and Yankees one more time hoping to stay above .500 and in sixth place.
The 1919 Cincinnati Reds and the 1922 St. Louis Browns are tied with 8-23 records, and the winner in their season-ending meeting will avoid the cellar.
The championship has been won, but still to be decided on the final day of the season:
Who will win the batting title? Paul Waner of the Pirates has taken over the lead at .368, and he’s followed by Elmer Smith (Indians) at .366, Bob Meusel (Yankees) at .358 and Lloyd Waner (Pirates) at .351.
Babe Ruth hit his 11th home run of the season in gameday #3, tying him for the league lead with St. Louis’ George Watkins. Can the Bambino hit one more to win the home run crown outright?
The Yankees’ Waite Hoyt goes for his seventh win of the season, which would tie him for the league lead with St. Louis’ Burleigh Grimes.
New York Giants 5, Cleveland Indians 2
It was tied at one after five innings. The Giants went ahead in the sixth on George Kelly’s RBI single, and 3-1 in the seventh on Casey Stengel’s RBI single. Frank Snyder tacked on two more with a single in the eighth inning. Failing to win to clinch the title for themselves, Cleveland’s eyes then turned to New York …

Washington Senators 4, New York Yankees 2 (13 inn.)
After scoring just two runs in the previous two games, New York got off to a good start with Babe Ruth’s solo homer in the first inning and Joe Dugan’s RBI single in the second. But the Yankees’ bats turned cold once again. The Senators tied it in the seventh on Muddy Ruel’s RBI single. New York had a chance to win it in the ninth but had a runner thrown out at home plate trying to score from second off a base hit. It stayed tied until the 13th. With two outs, Sam Rice singled, then scored on Goose Goslin’s double, who then scored on Joe Judge’s RBI single. New York brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 13th but Lou Gehrig hit into a game-ending double play.
