The 1920 Cleveland Indians finished up their championship season by posting a narrow victory in the final game of the campaign, putting their winning margin by two games over the idle 1930 St. Louis Cardinals.
The 1929 New York Yankees, a day being eliminated, hardly bothered to show up for the final game of the season and ended up being swept by the 1925 Washington Senators. The Yankees finished in a tie for third with the 1927 Pittsburgh Pirates and the 1929 Chicago Cubs after the Cubs won the finale to split their series.
Washington’s sweep assured them of a winning record and sixth place, one game ahead of the 1922 New York Giants.
Only two teams finished with losing records and they met in the final week. The 1922 St. Louis Browns won their finale against the 1919 Cincinnati Reds to salvage a series split and put the Reds into the cellar.
Final standings: 1. Cleveland Indians 21-11; 2. St. Louis Cardinals 19-13; T3. New York Yankees 18-14; T3. Pittsburgh Pirates 18-14; T3. Chicago Cubs 18-14; 6. Washington Senators 17-15; 7. New York Giants 16-16; 8. St. Louis Browns 9-23; 9. Cincinnati Reds 8-24.
Cleveland Indians 7, New York Giants 6
The Indians evened up their series after taking a big early lead, then holding on. Steve O’Neill drove in three runs in the first two innings as Cleveland went up 6-1. Doc Johnston’s home run put Cleveland up 7-3 in the sixth. Home runs by Heinie Groh and George Kelly helped the Giants get back within one run, but Duster Mails closed it out for his sixth save of the season.

Where did the Yankees’ offense go? With a championship on the line, the Murderer’s Row lineup managed just four runs in four games and New York was swept by Washington. The Yankees were swept out for the first and only time this season in the finale thanks to Dutch Reuther. Sam Rice had an RBI triple in the first inning and Reuther had a sacrifice fly in the second to account for Washington’s runs. New York stranded 11 runners, three of them on third base.

Chicago Cubs 12, Pittsburgh Pirates 7
Pittsburgh had to feel pretty good after scoring five times in the top of the first inning, which included a three-run homer by Glenn Wright. A solo homer from Paul Waner made it 6-3 Pirates after five innings. But everything fell apart in the bottom of the seventh, as the Cubs scored nine runs on eight hits, with a two-run single from Rogers Hornsby and a three-run homer from Hack Wilson being the biggest blows. Riggs Stephenson hit his third home run in two games, a solo shot in the first inning.
