Season number two of the West Coast College MLB League got underway with the defending champions, USC, picking up a victory. Arizona State beat UCLA in a battle of heavyweights, Arizona outlasted Cal State Fullerton in 17 innings and Pepperdine and Long Beach State handled a couple of former Pac-12 teams.

USC 8, Stanford 6
Bret Boone’s three-run homer gave the Trojans a 6-1 lead in the top of the fourth. Stanford closed the gap to 6-5 in the bottom of the eighth as Jody Gerut, Steve Buechele and Ed Sprague drove in runs. USC’s Jacque Jones led off the ninth with a solo homer, and the Trojans added an insurance run thanks to a Cardinal error to make it 8-5. Stanford got one back in the bottom of the ninth on another Gerut RBI single, but that was it. Barry Zito struck out 15 in eight innings in the win.

The Waves plated four runs on five hits in the first inning behind an Andy Stankiewicz three-run homer. It was 6-0 after after Rob Picciolo’s RBI double in the fourth. Mike Scott struck out 12 in a complete-game win and didn’t allow an earned run.

The Wildcats and Titans basically played two games, with no runs scored between the seventh and 16th innings. Justin Turner gave Cal State Fullerton a 4-3 lead in the top of the 17th with a solo home run. But the Wildcats began the bottom of the 17th with three straight hits, including Kevin Newman’s RBI single to tie it. One out later, Ron Hassey hit a walk-off three-run homer. There were 37 strikeouts in the game, 12 by Titan starter Tanner Bibee.

The 49ers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. Evan Longoria had an RBI single in the first, Troy Tulowitzki had a sacrifice fly and Garrett Hampson had an RBI single in the second and Evan Longoria had a sacrifice fly in the fourth. Cal got a solo homer from Darren Lewis in the fifth and a two-run homer from Taylor Douthit in the seventh. They got the tying run to second base in the bottom of the ninth but couldn’t bring him home.
