The Golden Bears got off to a good start, plating five runs in the second inning with five straight hits, including RBI singles by Darren Lewis and Bob Melvin and a two-run triple from Jackie Jensen. Taylor Douthit clubbed a two-run homer in the sixth inning to help Cal extend the lead to 8-1. Rick Monday homered for the Sun Devils.

All of the Bruin runs came via homers, with Eric Karros hitting a solo blast in the fourth and Dave Roberts providing a two-run tater in the seventh. Ed Coleman homered twice for the Beavers and Ken Forsch mostly shut down the Cardinal. Coleman’s solo blast opened the scoring in the fourth inning. The Beavers hit three homers in the sixth, with Jacoby Ellsbury, Michael Conforto and Coleman all going deep to make it 5-0. Forsch struck out nine in eight innings and gave up just a solo homer to Jody Gerut in the seventh.
