Pepp Golf: Round 1 at Conway Farms

After a long winter break, the Pepperdine Golf Tour continues with the fifth tournament of the season. The latest event takes place at a special place in Waves’ lore, as it comes from Conway Farms Golf Club, just outside of Chicago. It’s where Pepperdine won its first NCAA title in 1997.

Four different Waves won the first four tournaments of the season, and if things continue to go Joe Highsmith’s way, he’ll be the fifth different victor. His 7-under 64 gave him a two-shot lead over Joshua McCarthy and William Mouw.

Leaderboard: 1. Joe Highsmith 64; T2. Joshua McCarthy 66; T2. William Mouw 66; 4. Roy Cootes 67; T5. Derek Hitchner 68; T5. Cody McManus 68; T5. Sahith Theegala 68; 8. Frederick Wedel 69; 9. Andrew Putnam 70; T10. Josh Anderson 71; T10. Clay Feagler 71; T10. Joey Vrzich 71; 13. Austin Murphy 72; 14. RJ Manke 74; T15. Kevin DeHuff 75; T15. Johnny Mac Arthur 75.

  • Highsmith had six birdies in the first eight holes and 10 for his round. He’s been the most consistent golfer so far, finishing between third and fifth at the four previous events, but is seeking his first win.
  • Mouw, looking for his second victory, had an excellent showing with six birdies and one bogey to move into a tie for second.
  • McCarthy had a notable round that put him into a tie for second. He was 2-over after six holes, then posted three straight birdies. He had seven birdies in all and the only eagle of the entire round on #18.
  • Theegala had a flawless round, with three birdies and no bogeys, but that was only good enough to put him into a tie for fifth.
