After three games, there’s only one unbeaten team, and it’s defending champion USC. It wasn’t easy, as the Trojans were down to their last out against Long Beach State before reigning MVP Jacque Jones hit a walk-off two-run homer.
Four of the five contests in Gameday #3 were decided by one run, and the other was a two-run game.
UCLA’s Jackie Robinson continued his torrid pace with his fifth home run of the season in just three games. He’s 10-for-13 (.769) at the plate. USC’s Jones is second in the league in hitting at .600 (9-for-15). A few other exceptional starts: Jackie Jensen (CAL) at .538, Mark Canha (CAL) at .500 and Jeremy Reed (LBSU) at .500.

The Golden Bears took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Jeff Kent’s two-run homer. The Bruins’ Jackie Robinson, who went 5-for-5, provided an RBI single in the fifth and a solo homer in the eighth to tie the contest. There were a lot of fireworks in the ninth. Todd Zeile homered for UCLA and Robinson had a two-run single to make it 5-2. Cal came back with two runs in the bottom of the ninth on Mark Canha’s RBI single and Geoff Blum’s RBI groundout, but the potential tying run was stranded on second base.

Jason Giambi’s two-run homer gave the 49ers a 2-0 lead in the first inning. USC gained the lead at 4-2 after Jacque Jones hit a two-run homer in the third and Geoff Jenkins had a two-run single in the fourth. The Beach came right back with three runs in the fifth inning to go up 5-4, as Garrett Hampson had a two-run homer and Giambi added a solo shot. It stayed 5-4 until the bottom of the ninth. After LBSU got the first two outs, Eric Munson walked and Jones had a walk-off two-run homer, his second of the game and third of the season.

The Sun Devils got all three of their runs in the third inning on RBI doubles by Rick Monday and Reggie Jackson, and an RBI groundout by Bob Horner. After ASU loaded the bases in the fourth inning, Arizona pitchers retired the final 16 Sun Devil hitters. The Wildcats scored twice in the sixth inning on Terry Francona’s two-run single. But they stranded the potential game-tying run in scoring position in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

The Cardinal notched a quick run in the top of the first on Mike Aldrete’s RBI groundout. It stayed that way until the seventh. The Waves went up 3-1 with the help of two Stanford errors that led to three unearned runs. But Stanford came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the frame thanks to Jed Lowrie’s RBI double and Ed Sprague’s two-run homer.
