GTOP S3W1: 1946 Red Sox vs. 1933 Senators

Great Teams of the Past Season 3 got underway with the 1946 Boston Red Sox taking on the 1933 Washington Senators, and the two teams split their four-game series.

Rudy York had a team-best .400 average (6-for-15) for Boston, while Bobby Doerr (seven) and Dom DiMaggio (six) drove in 13 of the 18 Red Sox runs. The only hitter of note for the Senators was Heinie Manush, who batted .333 (5-for-15) with four extra-base hits.

Game #1: Washington 6, Boston 5

Bobby Doerr had an RBI single in the first inning and a three-run homer in the third as the Red Sox jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Ted Williams singled home a run in the top of the third to make Boston’s lead 5-2. But in the bottom of the seventh, Washington’s Dave Harris had a pinch-hit three-run homer to tie it, and then Buddy Myer tripled and scored on Heinie Manush’s sacrifice fly to put the Senators ahead for good. Boston left the tying run on second base in the ninth inning.

Game #2: Boston 5, Washington 1

Dom DiMaggio had a two-run single in the first inning to make it 2-0 Boston. It stayed that way until the top of the seventh, when DiMaggio had a solo home run to make it 3-0. The Senators got their only run in the bottom of the seventh as Dave Harris had a pinch-hit double and scored on Heinie Manush’s single. Boston added a couple of insurance runs in the ninth as Bobby Doerr had an RBI single and DiMaggio walked with the bases loaded. Boston’s Dave Ferris gave up only four hits in the win.

Bobby Doerr had a two-run homer in the fourth inning to give Boston a 2-1 lead, and the Red Sox added four more in the fifth as Ted Williams and Rudy York had RBI singles and Dom DiMaggio provided a two-run double. York added an RBI double in the seventh for Boston’s seventh and final run.

Game #4: Washington 3, Boston 1

The Senators’ Monte Weaver gave up just four hits in a complete-game win to even the series. Washington’s Joe Kuhel hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth. Boston’s only run came on a George Metkovich homer in the bottom of the fourth. The Senators’ Heinie Manush tripled to lead off the sixth inning and scored on Fred Schulte’s single for the final run of the game.
