The 49ers’ Troy Tulowitzki hit the first pitch of the game out of the park, but that turned out to be Long Beach State’s only run. The Waves’ Mike Scott was great the rest of the way and struck out 12. Chad Kreuter had an RBI single in the third and a solo homer in the fifth, and Rob Picciolo had a two-run homer in the eighth to lead Pepperdine’s offense.

It’s possibly the most shocking result in league history. The high-scoring Sun Devils were coming off a game in which they hit six home runs and scored 11 runs against USC. Oregon State starter Matthew Boyd, in five career starts spanning seasons 1 and 2, had an 0-4 record with an 8.28 ERA. Yet Boyd threw a four-hit, four-walk shutout. He scattered the baserunners and only had two innings where ASU runners made it into scoring position. All four OSU runs came via homers: Ed Coleman and Nick Madrigal with solo shots in the fourth and seventh innings, respectively, and a two-run blast by Michael Conforto in the eighth.
