The home team was victorious in all four games as the 1937 New York Yankees and the 1933 Washington Senators split their series. The Senators (4-4) won a pair of one-run games to open it up, while the Yankees (5-3) had an easier time of it in the next two. Both teams tossed one shutout.
Heinie Manush hit .471 (8-for-17) to lead the Senators, while Lou Gehrig and Bill Dickey both batted .385 (5-for-13). Gehrig hit three home runs in the series.
Game #1: Washington 6, New York 5
Lou Gehrig had an early solo homer and the Yankees took a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning on back-to-back RBI doubles from Bill Dickey and Jake Powell, and an RBI single from Tony Lazzeri. But the Senators tied it on Goose Goslin’s two-run homer in the fifth, went ahead on Fred Schulte’s RBI single in the seventh and got an insurance run on Buddy Myer’s RBI single in the eighth. They needed that extra run as the Yankees’ George Selkirk had a pinch-hit solo homer in the ninth, but Washington then got the final out for the win.

The Senators’ Lefty Stewart and the Yankees’ Monte Pearson put on an impressive pitching duel. Stewart scattered six hits over eight innings and stranded Yankee runners on third base in the fifth and sixth innings. It was 0-0 until the bottom of the eighth. After a pair of walks, Heinie Manush had a two-out RBI single to plate the only run of the game.
