The season has reached its halfway point and USC has maintained its two-game lead with its fifth straight victory. Oregon State took sole possession of second place with a comeback win over UCLA. The second-hottest team, California, won its third straight with a shutout victory over Cal State Fullerton. Behind USC and OSU, six teams are either one game over or one game under .500. It seems crazy that UCLA went from second-best in season 1 to second-worst at this point in season 2.

After finally winning a game, the Titans’ hopes of two in a row was dashed as the Golden Bears’ Brandon Morrow tossed a four-hit shutout. CSF put runners on second base in four different innings but no further. Cal opened the scoring with back-to-back homers by Jeff Kent and Marcus Semien in the fourth inning. Five different Golden Bears drove in runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.

Oregon State 7, UCLA 3
The Bruins jumped out a 3-0 lead as Shane Mack hit solo homers in both the first and second innings, and UCLA also got a solo shot from Todd Zeile. But the Beavers recovered and were able to take over sole possession of second place. Adley Rutchman’s two-run double in the fifth inning tied it up and Steven Kwan’s RBI single gave OSU the lead. The Beavers extended their lead to 6-3 on Cole Gillespie’s two-run homer in the sixth.
