MLB College S2 Gameday #10

Gameday #10 saw some excellent pitching performances from the likes of Long Beach State’s Steve Trachsel, Oregon State’s Ken Forsch, USC’s Tom Seaver and Cal State Fullerton’s Ricky Romero (plus Pepperdine’s Dan Haren in a loss). USC kept its two-game lead (with eight to play) over OSU as both teams were victorious. The fifth game was a slugfest with Arizona State beating UCLA.

USC 5, Stanford 1

Stanford starter Jim Lonborg kept the Trojans’ bats at bay for the first four innings and the Cardinal took a 1-0 lead on an RBI groundout by Jed Lowrie in the second inning. But the Trojans came alive and scored in each of their final four at-bats, starting with a two-run homer from Geoff Jenkins in the fifth inning. Mark McGwire had an RBI double in the sixth and a solo homer in the eighth. Tom Seaver had an excellent performance on the mound for USC’s sixth straight win.

The Beavers’ Ken Forsch tossed a three-hit shutout to keep the Beavers two games back of USC in the standings. The Waves’ Dan Haren was almost equally as good, and all three runs he allowed were unearned. With one out and two runners on, a dropped fly ball scored the first OSU run. The second run scored on Steve Lyons’ RBI groundout (which would have been the third out). Jacoby Ellsbury followed with an RBI single.

Arizona State 8, UCLA 6

The Bruins trailed 5-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh, but plated four runs on six hits, including RBI doubles from Todd Zeile and Shane Mack, to go up 6-5. But the Sun Devils regained the lead with three in the top of the ninth, with Alvin Davis tying the game with an RBI double, and Willie Bloomquist providing a two-run double for the winning margin. Bloomquist had earlier hit a two-run homer. UCLA, which lost its fourth straight, hit into a game-ending double play.
