GTOP S3W3: 1940 Reds vs. 1934 Cardinals

The 1940 Cincinnati Reds won their first series of the season, and sent the flailing 1934 St. Louis Cardinals to their third straight series defeat. After the teams split the first two games, the Reds (7-5) won the next two at home.

Ernie Lombardi hit .375 (6-for-16) with six RBI to lead Cincinnati. The Cardinals (3-9) were led by Ripper Collins and Joe Medwick, who both hit .353 (6-for-17). Medwick homered twice and drove in seven runs.

Game #1: Cincinnati 7, St. Louis 4 (12 inn.)

Almost half of the scoring took place in extra innings. It was tied 3-3 after nine innings. The Reds got one in the top of the 11th on Mike McCormick’s RBI single. The Cardinals got one back in the bottom of the 11th on Jack Rothrock’s RBI double to extend the contest. In the top of the 12th, St. Louis got an RBI single from Ivan Goodman and a two-run single from Ernie Lombardi to put the game away. St. Louis went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 12th.

Game #2: St. Louis 7, Cincinnati 4

Ernie Lombardi’s two-run double put the Reds up 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. There were four straight hits including an RBI single from Joe Medwick and a two-run double from Ripper Collins. Medwick later homered for the second straight game, a two-run shot in the seventh.

Game #3: Cincinnati 4, St. Louis 2

The Cardinals scored two quick runs on Joe Medwick’s RBI double and Ripper Collins’ RBI triple in the top of the first, but that would be it. The Reds tied the game on Ernie Lombardi’s solo home run in the seventh. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Harry Craft hit a walk-off two-run homer.

Game #4: Cincinnati 5, St. Louis 3

The Reds scored five times in the first three innings, then held on to win the series. Ival Goodman and Frank McCormick had back-to-back home runs in the first inning. In the third, McCormick provided an RBI triple, followed by a run-scoring single from Ernie Lombardi. St. Louis got three runs back in the sixth and seventh, but then went down 1-2-3 in both the eighth and ninth innings.
