MLB College S2 Gameday #11

The season’s not quite two-thirds of the way done, but it might already be over. Defending champ USC won its seventh straight game, while practically all of the Trojans’ closest competitors lost on gameday #11. At 10-1, USC has a three-game lead over Oregon State with seven to play. The only other team that began the day at .500 or better to win was Stanford. Individual highlights included a shutout from Arizona’s Craig Lefferts, a two-home run game from Cal’s Bob Melvin and a grand slam by UCLA’s Dave Roberts.

Chase Utley’s solo homer gave the Bruins a 2-1 lead in the third. Disaster struck in the fourth for the Waves. The first two UCLA hitters struck out, but the next two runners reached base. An error then extended the inning, and the Bruins proceeded to put up eight unearned runs, which included a two-run single from Eric Karros and a grand slam by Dave Roberts.
