The 1934 Detroit Tigers and the 1933 Washington Senators split a closely-contested series, with three of the four games being decided by a single run. The Tigers’ Tommy Bridges threw a shutout in the other contest.
The Tigers (2-6) were led by Charlie Gehringer, who batted .500 (8-for-16) with three RBI. Goose Goslin was in the lineup for both teams, but the version for the Senators (6-6) hit a team-best .385 (5-for-13) with four RBI.
Game #1: Detroit 2, Washington 1
The Senators scored first on Heinie Manush’s two-out RBI single in the third inning. The Tigers finally got on the board in the sixth inning when Jo Jo White led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. They took the lead in the seventh when Marv Owen singled and later scored on a Vic Sorrell sacrifice fly. Sorrell got the win, not allowing an earned run and only three hits in his 8 1/3 innings. Washington put two runners on base in the ninth, but Firpo Marberry came in and got the Senators to hit into a game-ending double play.

The Senators trailed 1-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth. After the first two outs were made, they loaded the bases, and Heinie Manush followed with a bases-clearing triple. They made it 4-1 in the seventh on Goose Goslin’s RBI double. Detroit scored once in the eighth and once in the ninth on RBI singles by Charlie Gehringer and Pete Fox, respectively, to close within one run. After the last one, the Senators’ Jack Russell came in and got the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.

The Tigers’ Tommy Bridges was excellent, tossing a four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts. The Senators only had one baserunner make it to third base. Offensively, the Tigers got an RBI single from Goose Goslin in the fourth, an RBI double from Billy Rogell and an RBI single from Hank Greenberg in the sixth, and a sacrifice fly from Jo Jo White in the seventh.

The Tigers looked to be on their way to a series win when they scored four runs on six hits in the first inning, including a two-run homer from Hank Greenberg. The Senators got a three-run homer from Goose Goslin in the third inning. They tied it at five in the sixth after Joe Kuhel’s RBI triple and Ossie Bluege’s run-scoring single. Fred Schulte’s solo homer in the eighth turned out to be the game-winner.
