GTOP S3W3: 1941 Dodgers vs. 1935 Cubs

The 1935 Chicago Cubs moved into a tie for first place at the conclusion of week #3 after they took three of four from the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers.

The Cubs (8-4) are tied atop the standings with the 1937 New York Yankees. The Dodgers (4-4) came into the week in first place on winning percentage, but slid back to .500 with these results.

Billy Herman was in the lineup for both teams, and the Cubs’ version batted .412 (7-for-17), while Frank Demaree had another big week at .375 (6-for-16) with four RBI. The Dodgers got a shutout by Curt Davis but struggled at the plate, with Pee Wee Reese the top hitter at .267 (4-for-15).

Game #1: Chicago 2, Brooklyn 1 (11 inn.)

Behind Bill Lee’s pitching and a solo home from from Frank Demaree in the fourth inning, the Cubs took a 1-0 lead into the ninth inning. But Dodger pinch-hitter Lew Riggs led off the ninth with a walk, moved around the bases and scored on Pete Reiser’s two-out single. Brooklyn challenged again in the top of the 11th, putting two runners on with one out, but Chicago got out of the jam. In the bottom of the 11th, Demaree, Phil Cavaretta and Stan Hack had three consecutive singles, the last one by Hack providing the walk-off run.

Game #2: Chicago 5, Brooklyn 2

The Dodgers took an early lead on a Billy Herman RBI single in the third inning. But the Cubs scored twice in the fourth on a Frank Demaree sacrifice fly and an RBI double from Stan Hack. They scored three more in the fifth with Demaree providing a two-run single.

Game #3: Brooklyn 3, Chicago 0

The Dodgers’ Curt Davis got them back in the win column thanks to his shutout. The Cubs more than doubled the Dodgers’ hit output, 7-3, but Davis made Chicago go 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. It as scoreless until the fifth, when two Cub errors helped the Dodgers plate their first run. Brooklyn got two more in the seventh on Mickey Owen’s RBI triple, followed by a sacrifice fly from Davis.

Game #4: Chicago 4, Brooklyn 2

The Cubs built an early lead and went on to win the series. Chuck Klein had an RBI single in the first inning, and in the second inning winning pitcher Lon Warneke had a sacrifice fly and Billy Herman had a run-scoring double. Klein added another RBI single in the fifth inning to make it 4-0. Warneke was five outs away from a shutout, but the Dodgers’ Pete Reiser hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning.
