GTOP S3W4: 1934 Cardinals vs. 1946 Red Sox

The 1934 St. Louis Cardinals won the opener, but the 1946 Boston Red Sox came back to win the next three to claim the series victory. The Red Sox (8-8) got back to .500, while the Cardinals (4-12) went 1-3 for the fourth straight week.

Boston’s Dave Ferriss became the league’s first four-game winner and is 4-0 after four starts with his shutout in the finale. St. Louis’ Tex Carleton had a shutout of his own in the opener.

Game #1: St. Louis 2, Boston 0

Two guys named Tex — Carleton for the Cardinals, Hughson for the Red Sox — put on a tremendous pitchers’ duel. It was tied 0-0 heading to the ninth. Neither pitcher had allowed a runner to make it to third base at that point. In the top of the ninth, Hughson finally made one bad pitch, and the Cardinals’ Joe Medwick slammed a two-run homer for what turned out to be the game-winner.
