MLB College S2 Gameday #13

USC took a step closer to another title, avenging an earlier loss to Arizona State to go back up by three games with just five to play. Gameday #13 had a lot of good pitching performances and some low-scoring games. The Trojans’ Barry Zito became the first starter to go 4-0, while Mike Scott of Pepperdine and Jason Vargas of Long Beach State had shutouts. Honorable mention to UCLA’s Matt Young, who didn’t give up an earned run in his complete-game win, while Cal’s Brandon Morrow gave up just one in his victory.

California 3, Arizona 1

The Wildcats’ defense committed four errors, leading to all three Golden Bear runs being unearned and spoiling a very good start by Arizona pitcher Scott Erickson. Arizona more than doubled Cal’s hit total. Cal’s runs came on an RBI double by Conor Jackson in the sixth inning, an RBI groundout by Jeff Kent in the eighth and an RBI double from Geoff Blum in the ninth. Kevin Newman hit a solo homer for the Wildcats’ only run but his three errors were key in the defeat.

UCLA 3, Stanford 1

The Bruins scored all three of the runs in the top of the first on Eric Karros’ RBI double and Chase Utley’s two-run single. That would be it, but it would be enough. Matt Young threw a complete game and only gave up a single unearned run in the fourth inning. Bob Boone had an RBI single for the Cardinal after an error.

USC 5, Arizona State 2

The Trojans plated three unearned runs in the third inning. With two outs, Fred Lynn had a two-run single and Mark McGwire followed with an RBI single. USC added two more in the sixth, which included an RBI double from Roy Smalley. ASU broke up Barry Zito’s shutout bid in the eighth inning, but the Trojan starter still became the league’s first four-game winner of the season.

Pepperdine 3, Cal State Fullerton 0

The Waves ended a four-game losing streak thanks to Mike Scott’s six-hit, 12-strikeout shutout. He got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second and left runners on the corners in the fifth. All three Pepperdine runs came in the first inning thanks to Rob PIcciolo’s three-run homer. Three of the Waves’ four hits came in the first inning.
