Round 1 of the eighth tournament of the season, which takes place at the Torrey Pines North Course, played out much like round 1 at the seventh tournament of the season at PGA West. Just like last time, RJ Manke and Sahith Theegala are 1-2 in the standings.
Manke fired a 6-under 66 to end up one shot better than Theegala. Both faded badly in round 2 last time, so they’ll hope to avoid continuing the duplication of their last efforts.

- Manke was flawless, with six birdies and no miscues. He had birdies on each of the final three holes.
- Theegala was even better down the stretch. He was 1-over after 13 holes. He then posted an eagle on the par-5 14th hole (the only one of the day) before recording a birdie on each of the final four holes.
- Last tournament’s winner, McCarthy, is in third place just two shots back. He had five birdies against just one bogey.
- The par-72 course gave up an average of 71.9 strokes. Seven players finished below par.
