The last-place 1934 Detroit Tigers took it to the first-place 1937 New York Yankees in the first two contests of their four-game series, but the Yankees were able to salvage the series with two walk-off victories at home.
Ivy Andrews earned both wins in relief for the Yankees (10-6). Jake Powell hit a team-best .412 (7-for-17) while Joe DiMaggio his three home runs. Detroit (4-8) was led by Billy Rogell, who hit .600 (9-for-15) and Hank Greenberg, who hit two home runs and drove in six.
Game #1: Detroit 4, New York 2
Hank Greenberg got the Tigers going with a two-run homer in the second inning. Goose Goslin singled and scored on an error to make it 3-0 in the sixth. Joe DiMaggio ended the shutout bid with a solo homer in the seventh, but the Tigers came back with another run in the bottom half of the frame as Pete Fox doubled and scored on Mickey Cochrane’s two-out single. The Yankees made it 4-2 in the eighth on pinch-hitter Tommy Henrich’s RBI double. DiMaggio doubled with one out in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate, but Elden Auker got the final two outs for his first win of the season.

Lou Gehrig started the Yankees off with a two-run homer in the top of the first, but it was all Tigers after that. Billy Rogell went 4-for-4, Marv Owen and Pete Fox went a combined 5-for-7 with seven RBI in the 7 and 8 spots, and this one was a rout. The Tigers scored 12 without a home run, while the Yankees hit two with George Selkirk providing a pinch-hit solo shot in the seventh.

The Yankees built a 4-0 lead after five innings thanks to solo homers from Joe DiMaggio and a two-run blast from Frank Crosetti. But the Tigers scored four in the seventh to tie it, including a two-run double from Pete Fox and a game-tying sacrifice fly from starter Tommy Bridges. Detroit had a potential go-ahead run thrown out at the plate in the 11th by Yankee left fielder Jake Powell. The Yankees finally won it in the 10th. Crosetti led off with a double and later scored on DiMaggio’s walk-off single.

The finale went back and forth. Hank Greenberg homered and had a two-run double to lead the Tigers. Down 5-3 in the seventh, the Yankees’ Tony Lazzeri homoered, and an error gave New York the tying run. Detroit went back in front 6-5 in the top of the eighth on Jo Jo White’s RBI double. New York tied it again in the bottom of the eighth on Myril Hoag’s RBI single. In the bottom of the ninth, the Yankees put runners on first and second and Lazzeri came through with a two-out walk-off single that scored Lou Gehrig.
