The 1935 Chicago Cubs took hold of first place in the league at the halfway point of their season after taking three of four games from the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics. The Cubs (11-5) lead the 1937 Yankees by one game, while the Athletics fell to .500 at 6-6.
Frank Demaree continued his incredible season for the Cubs, hitting .533 (8-for-15) to raise his season average to .469. Mickey Cochrane batted .438 (7-for-16) to lead the Athletics.
Game #1: Chicago 6, Philadelphia 5
The Cubs looked to have this one well in hand as they built a 5-0 lead. Frank Demaree went 4-for-5 and had an RBI single in the first. Stan Hack had a two-run triple in the sixth and Billy Jurges and Augie Galan had RBI singles in the eighth. The Athletics made it a game once again in the bottom of the eighth. Philadelphia loaded the bases and with one out, Bing Miller hit a grand slam. A couple batters later, pinch-hitter Joe Boley tied it with an RBI triple. The Cubs recovered and retook the lead in the top of the ninth on a Demaree RBI triple.
