MLB College S2 Gameday #17

Oregon State clinched at least a share of second place by ending champion USC’s four-game winning streak. Only one gameday remains in the season. The Beavers will hope to beat UCLA to keep sole possession of second place. Long Beach State will need to defeat Arizona State and get help.

Andy Messersmith and Jack McDowell had a scoreless pitchers’ duel going through six innings. Cal finally got on the board in the top of the seventh on Darren Lewis’ RBI single. The Cardinal came back with a two-run homer from Bob Boone in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead. It was short-lived, as the Golden Bears plated three runs in the top of the eighth, including run-scoring singles from Jeff Kent and Mark Canha.

This one had two more great pitching performances, as Joe Magrane and Mike Scott both threw eight scoreless innings. The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead on Ron Hassey’s home run in the top of the ninth. In the bottom of the ninth, the Waves’ David Newhan led off with a single and later scored on Chad Kreuter’s groundout. In the top of the 11th, Arizona loaded the bases with one out and Shelley Duncan provided an RBI single for what turned out to be the game-winner.

Ed Coleman hit a three-run homer in the first inning to give the Beavers the early lead. The Trojans scored single runs in three straight innings to tie it, with an RBI single from Roy Smalley in the fourth, a home run by Jacque Jones in the fifth and an RBI single by Eric Munson in the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, OSU regained the lead when Steven Kwan led off with a single and later scored on Nick Madrigal’s hit. Beaver relievers got the final nine Trojans hitters out.

The Bruins scored the first five runs, but the Beach scored the next five. It stayed 5-5 until the top of the 11th, when UCLA put up another five runs to claim the win. Dave Roberts had an RBI double, Jackie Robinson and Eric Karros had RBI singles and Todd Zeile and Troy Glaus had sacrifice flies.

The Titans won consecutive games for the first time all season with the upset win over the Sun Devils. CSF starter Tanner Bibee was impressive, not allowing an earned run in seven innings while striking out 10. Bob Horner had an RBI single in the first but that was it for ASU. Kurt Suzuki had an RBI single and Reed Johnson had a two-run double in the second inning to put the Titans ahead, and Tim Wallach added an RBI single in the fourth.
