The 1934 Detroit Tigers and the 1946 Boston Red Sox played an entertaining series, alternating wins and losses and splitting their four-game set.
Dave Ferriss improved to 5-0 after five starts for the Red Sox (10-10) with another strong performance, though he gave up two runs to see his ERA rise to 0.80 on the season. Dom DiMaggio hit .500 (8-for-16) and drove in seven runs to give him a league-best 19 RBI. Charlie Gehringer batted .438 (7-for-16) to lead the Tigers (6-10). Boston’s Bobby Doerr and Detroit’s Hank Greenberg both increased their season home run total to five.
Game #1: Boston 5, Detroit 3
The Red Sox broke open a 1-1 tie with a three-run fifth inning. Rip Russell led off with a double, and Johnny Pesky followed with an RBI single. Later in the inning, Dom DiMaggio provided a two-run single. Russell tacked on an insurance run with a solo homer in the sixth inning. They almost needed it, as Detroit’s Hank Greenberg hit a two-run homer in the ninth.

Game #2: Detroit 3, Boston 2
The Tigers plated all three of their runs in the sixth inning. Goose Goslin and Billy Rogell had back-to-back RBI singles, and Hank Greenberg had a sacrifice fly. Detroit’s Elden Auker almost had a shutout, but Boston scored two in the ninth after a Hal Wagner sacrifice fly and a Rip Russell RBI single. The Red Sox got all the runs they would need in the third inning, as Bobby Doerr and Rudy York had RBI singles and Dom DiMaggio had a sacrifice fly. Pesky finished with four hits. It was 4-1 heading to the ninth, and the Red Sox scored four more times, including a two-run homer from George Metkovich.

Game #4: Detroit 10, Boston 9
Boston’s Bobby Doerr started the scoring with a two-run homer in the second inning. Detroit scored the next four runs, including a two-run homer by Hank Greenberg. The Red Sox went back in front 5-4 with a three-run sixth inning, which featured a two-run single from Dom DiMaggio. Detroit rebounded with six runs in the bottom of the sixth, which included a two-run single by Charlie Gehringer and a three-run homer from Goose Goslin. Despite trailing 10-5, Boston wasn’t done.
