The 1935 Chicago Cubs and the 1940 Cincinnati Reds came in as two of the top teams in the league and they played a highly entertaining series. The first two games both had amazing ninth-inning finishes. The second two contests were high-scoring routs. The overall result was a four-game split.
The Cubs (13-7) could have opened up a big lead in the standings with another win or two, but the Reds (9-7) kept them within striking distance.
Augie Galan batted .429 (6-for-14) to lead the Cubs. Lonny Frey and Frank McCormick both hit .312 (5-for-16) to lead the Reds.
Game #1: Chicago 6, Cincinnati 3 (11 inn.)
The Reds took a 3-1 lead to the ninth inning. But in the top of the ninth, Augie Galan hit a one-out double. After the second out, Chuck Klein and Gabby Harnett and Frank Demaree posted three consecutive singles, with the hits by Klein and Demaree plating runs, tying the game at three. In the top of the 11th, pinch-hitter Ken O’Dea led off with a double. He scored on Billy Herman’s single, and Chuck Klein followed with a two-run home run.

Game #2: Cincinnati 2, Chicago 1
This one had a fantastic pitching duel between the Reds’ Jim Turner and the Cubs’ Larry French. Chicago went up 1-0 when Augie Galan led off the sixth inning with a solo home run. It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth. After the first Red batter was retired, Harry Craft doubled, Mike McCormick walked and Billy Myers singled to load the bases. After the second out of the inning, Billy Werber hit the ball off the right-center field wall, scoring two runs and giving the Reds a walk-off win.

It was another good pitchers’ duel for a while, but a scoreless game got broken open by a four-run effort by the Reds in the top of the sixth inning.
