GTOP S3W5: 1933 Senators vs. 1931 Athletics

The 1933 Washington Senators and the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics came in with .500 records, and after a pretty entertaining, fairly high-scoring series, both teams went out with .500 records as week number 5 came to an end.

The Athletics (8-8) scored 19 runs despite hitting .254 and were led by Jimmie Foxx, who batted .467 (7-for-15) with three home runs and three doubles. The Senators (10-10) scored 24 runs and batted .309, with Joe Kuhel leading the way with a .500 average (8-for-16) with four extra-base hits and six RBI.

Game #1: Philadelphia 5, Washington 4 (10 inn.)

The Athletics trailed 2-0 and 3-1, but tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on Max Bishop’s RBI single. The Senators went back in front in the top of the ninth as Ossie Bluege doubled and pinch-hitter Sam Rice had an RBI triple. In the bottom of the ninth, the first Athletic batter reached based via error, and he later scored the tying run on an RBI single by Mule Haas. In the bottom of the 10th, another Washington error put a runner on with one out, and two batters later, Jimmy Dykes provided a walk-off RBI single.

Game #2: Washington 5, Philadelphia 2

Ossie Bluege’s RBI single put the Senators ahead 2-1 in the fourth inning and this time Washington wouldn’t relinquish the lead. Joe Kuhel had an RBI double in the eighth and Goose Goslin and Joe Cronin had run-scoring singles in the ninth to make it 5-1. The Athletics’ Jimmie Foxx, who had homered earlier, doubled in the bottom of the ninth and scored on Jimmy Dykes’ double, but it ended there at 5-2.

Game #3: Washington 9, Philadelphia 3

The Senators had another big game at the plate. Tied 3-3 in the fourth, Washington got an RBI triple from Goose Goslin in the fourth and a solo homer from Ossie Bluege in the fifth, then put up four runs in the sixth with the help of a two-run single from Bluege. The Athletics didn’t score again after Mickey Cochrane’s two-run homer in the third inning.

This time was it the Athletics’ turn to put up nine runs, and they would need most of them. Jimmie Foxx had a three-run homer in the third inning to make it 5-0. Mule Haas’ two-run single in the eighth inning made it 9-2. Led by Joe Kuhel’s 4-for-5 effort, the Senators scored four late runs to make it interesting, but only got within three runs at the end.
