Only the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers pulled off a series win in week #5, as they took three of four from the 1937 New York Yankees. The other three series were four-game splits. The first-place 1935 Chicago Cubs had an opportunity to really grab a big lead, but could only split with the 1940 Cincinnati Reds to maintain a two-game lead.
Frank Demaree finally started to come back to Earth, as the Cubs’ standout batted just .176 (3-for-17) against the Reds, dropping his season average to .407. He’s still got a 50-point lead in the hitting race, though. A few struggling hitters finally came through (looking at you, Jimmy Dykes of Philadelphia and Joe Kuhel of Washington). No home runs for Lou Gehrig this week, so teammate Joe DiMaggio has caught up to him with seven long balls on the season.
Dave Ferriss of the 1946 Boston Red Sox has half of his team’s wins and he’s 5-0 after five starts. Curt Davis of the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers could do the same, as he’s 4-0 after four starts. They’re two of just five starters who are unbeaten at this point in the season. Four starters have yet to earn a win, and it’s hard to believe that Dizzy Dean of the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals is one of them (though he’s in the league’s top 10 in ERA).
In week 6, none of the top four teams in the league will be playing each other, so we’ll have to see if who can take advantage against the lesser squads.
