GTOP S3W6: 1941 Dodgers vs. 1934 Tigers

The 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers kept their spot near the top of the standings after winning three of four games from the 1934 Detroit Tigers. Two of those Dodger wins came in extra innings, and they nearly had a pair of shutouts.

Brooklyn’s Curt Davis became the second pitcher in the league to go 5-0 after five starts. Billy Herman was the top hitter for the Dodgers (12-8), as he batted .412 (7-for-17). Marv Owen hit .333 (5-for-15) with two doubles and two home runs for the Tigers (7-13). He drove in six of the nine Detroit runs in the series.

Game #1: Brooklyn 5, Detroit 3 (10 inn.)

The Tigers’ Marv Owen hit a pair of home runs to give Detroit a 3-2 lead after seven innings. The Dodgers tied it in the eighth on a two-out RBI single by Pee Wee Reese, sending it to extra innings. In the top of the 10th, Brooklyn’s Mickey Owen’s two-run single put the Dodgers ahead for good. Reliever Hugh Casey retired all six batters he faced for the win.

Game #2: Brooklyn 3, Detroit 1

The Dodgers’ Curt Davis was one pitch away from his third shutout of the season. He didn’t get it, but he did improve to 5-0 while lowering his ERA to 1.26. It was scoreless through five innings, but back-to-back doubles by Billy Herman and Pete Reiser made it 1-0 in the sixth. The Dodgers scored two more in the ninth on Dixie Walker’s RBI double and Herman’s RBI single. It turned out that they needed the insurance run, as Goose Goslin hit a solo homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to end Davis’ shutout bid.

Game #3: Brooklyn 1, Detroit 0 (10 inn.)

This was a fantastic pitchers’ duel between the Dodgers’ Whit Wyatt and the Tigers’ Elden Auker. The game stayed scoreless through nine innings, though both teams had runners in scoring position many times but couldn’t come up with a clutch hit. With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Dixie Walker hit his third double of the day, and Billy Herman followed with a walk-off RBI single. Wyatt improved to 4-1 after five starts and tossed his second shutout of the season.

Game #4: Detroit 5, Brooklyn 1

This one stayed scoreless until the fifth inning, when the Dodgers’ Dolph Camilli hit a solo home run. That would be it for Brooklyn, however. The Tigers ended a 16-inning scoreless streak in the seventh inning with three runs, which included a two-run double from Marv Owen and a sacrifice fly from winning pitcher Tommy Bridges. The Tigers added two more in the eighth on a Billy Rogell sacrifice fly and a run-scoring single by Owen.
