GTOP S3W6: 1934 Cardinals vs. 1935 Cubs

The first-place 1935 Chicago Cubs looked to pad their lead in the standings as they squared off against the last-place 1934 St. Louis Cardinals, but it didn’t work as they hoped. The Cubs won the first two contests at home, but the Cardinals pulled off a remarkable ninth-inning comeback to win game three, then easily won the finale to split the series.

It’s the first time that the Cardinals (6-14) haven’t lost a series, as they went 1-3 in each of the first four weeks. The Cubs (15-9) have split their last two series and now lead the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers by just one game.

Ripper Collins batted .375 (6-for-16) with six RBI to lead the Cardinals. Chuck Klein hit .438 (7-for-16) with two home runs and five RBI for the Cubs.

Game #1: Chicago 6, St. Louis 4

The Cardinals shocked the home crowd by scoring four runs in the first inning, as Pepper Martin led off the game with a home run and Ripper Collins hit a three-run shot. The Cubs halved the deficit on Chuck Klein’s two-run homer in the bottom of the first. Chicago then tied it in the sixth on Billy Jurges’ two-run double. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Klein hit his second two-run homer of the game to give the Cubs the walk-off win. After his rough start, Larry French threw eight shutout innings to improve to 4-2 on the season.
