The 1935 Chicago Cubs have company at the top of the standings! The 1937 New York Yankees swept the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics, and now the two best teams in the league are both 15-9 with eight games to play.
Three of the four games were close, and the Athletics (8-12) either had the tying run on base or at the plate in the ninth inning of each of them. This is only the second sweep of Season 3.
Tony Lazzeri batted .615 (8-for-13) with seven extra-base hits, while Joe DiMaggio hit .571 (8-for-14) with two home runs, giving him the league lead with nine. Mickey Cochrane batted .357 (5-for-14) for the Athletics.
Game #1: New York 4, Philadelphia 3
Lou Gehrig broke open a 1-1 game with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth. In the bottom of the seventh, Red Rolfe led off with a double and scored on an error to put the Yankees ahead 4-1. They’d need those extra runs, as the Athletics’ Jimmie Foxx hit a two-run homer in the eighth inning. In the ninth, the Athletics got the tying run to second base but no further.

Game #2: New York 4, Philadelphia 0
A pitching duel between Hall of Famers Lefty Grove and Lefty Gomez lived up to the hype, as they both put up zeroes until the eighth inning. In the bottom of the eighth, one team finally came through. The Yankees had a crazy inning and plated four runs on four hits, three of them triples. With one out, Joe DiMaggio tripled, and he scored the game’s first run on Lou Gehrig’s single. After the second out, Myril Hoag had an RBI triple. After a walk, Tony Lazzeri knocked his third extra-base hit of the day, and his second triple, to score two more and make it 4-0. Gomez ended up with his league-high third shutout of the season.
