Both the 1933 Washington Senators and the 1940 Cincinnati Reds were hoping for a sweep that would put them at or near the top of the league standings, but they could only manage a split that kept both teams near the middle of the pack.

Lonny Frey hit .438 (7-for-16) to pace the Reds (11-9), while Heinie Manush batted .412 (7-for-17) to lead the Senators (12-12).

Game #1: Washington 5, Cincinnati 4

The Reds went ahead 2-0 on Harry Craft’s two-run double in the second inning. The Senators scored the next four runs, including a three-run seventh inning that featured an RBI single from Ossie Bluege, an RBI double from Luke Sewell and a sacrifice fly from Buddy Myer. Cincinnati evened it up at four as Billy Myers walked and eventually scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the seventh, and Frank McCormick hit a solo homer in the eighth. Washington went back ahead on Heinie Manush’s RBI single in the top of the ninth and went on for the win.
