GTOP S3W7: 1934 Tigers vs. 1931 Athletics

After being routed in game one, the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics bounced back to win the next three and claim the series against the 1934 Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers (8-16) scored nine runs in game one but had just a total of four in the next three contests, while the Athletics (11-13) had two easy wins followed by a late come-from-behind victory in the finale.

Al Simmons batted .429 (6-for-14) with four RBI to lead Philadelphia. Hank Greenberg hit .400 (6-for-15) and drove in three runs for Detroit.

Game #1: Detroit 9, Philadelphia 1

During a five-run second inning, winning pitcher Schoolboy Rowe had a two-run single and Hank Greenberg had an RBI triple. The lead grew to 7-0 before the Athletics got their first hit and only run in the fourth inning. Greenberg also had a two-run single in the eighth inning.

Game #2: Philadelphia 5, Detroit 2

The Athletics’ Mickey Cochrane broke up a 1-1 tie with a solo homer in the fourth inning. Philadelphia’s Max Bishop tripled and scored on Al Simmons’ single in the fifth inning to make it 3-1. Jimmie Foxx added to the lead with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. The Athletics ended a five-game losing streak.

The Athletics got all the runs they would need in the top of the first, scoring three on an RBI double from Mickey Cochrane and an two-run double by Bing Miller. Dib Williams hit a solo homer in the seventh inning. Rube Walberg earned his team-best fourth win of the season.

Game #4: Philadelphia 2, Detroit 1

The Tigers struck first in the third inning when Hank Greenberg doubled and scored on Billy Rogell’s single. It was still 1-0 going to the eighth inning. The Tigers got the first two outs, but then things feel apart after Tommy Bridges issued two straight walks. Mule Haas followed with an RBI single to tie it, and the Athletics went up 2-1 on Al Simmons’ RBI single. Philadelphia reliever Eddie Rommel came in to get the final six outs.
