GTOP S3W8: 1931 Athletics vs. 1941 Dodgers

Disaster for the Dodgers! The 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers had come into their series with the 1931 Philadelphia Athletics winning nine of 11 and pulling into a first-place tie with eight games to play. But the Athletics pulled off a four-game sweep, putting the two teams even at 15-13 in the standings with four games remaining.

The Athletics have now won seven in a row after losing the previous five. Both teams will be rooting hard for the Cubs’ and Yankees’ opponents as week 8 continues.

Philadelphia hit .314 for the series and was led by Mule Haas (.474, 9-for-19, a walk-off home run in game 4) and Jimmie Foxx (.467, 7-for-15, two home runs). Brooklyn hit just .187 and was led by Joe Medwick’s .286 average (4-for-14).

Game #1: Philadelphia 7, Brooklyn 1

The Dodgers’ Curt Davis entered as the last perfect pitcher in the league, with a 6-0 record after six starts. He left with his first loss after being shelled. The Dodgers scored first on Joe Medwick’s RBI double in the first inning, but that’s all they would get. Jimmy Dykes gave the Athletics a 2-1 lead in the fourth with a two-run homer. The Athletics added three more in the fifth on an RBI triple by Jimmie Foxx and RBI singles from Dykes and Dib Williams. Dykes drove in his fourth run of the game in the ninth inning. The Athletics’ Roy Mahaffey had a rare good start to improve to 2-4.

Game #4: Philadelphia 5, Brooklyn 4 (10 inn.)

The Athletics jumped out to a 3-0 lead on Jimmie Foxx’s three-run home run in the first inning. The Dodgers bounced back to take a 4-3 lead after Lew Riggs’ three-run homer in the sixth inning. Brooklyn still led 4-3 in the ninth and was two outs away from giving Luke Hamlin his first win of the season. But Foxx hit another home run, this time a solo shot in the bottom of the ninth, to send the game to extra innings. With one out in the bottom of the 10th, Mule Haas hit a walk-off solo home run as the Athletics finished off the sweep.
