Does anyone want to win this league? After the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers got swept earlier in week 8, the co-leader, the 1935 Chicago Cubs, could only manage to win one of four games against the 1946 Boston Red Sox.
That opens the door for the 1937 New York Yankees to clinch the title in their upcoming week 8 series against the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals. New York is 17-11, a game better than Chicago (16-12) and the 1940 Cincinnati Reds.
Johnny Pesky hit .444 (8-for-18) to lead the Red Sox (14-14), while Dave Ferriss improved to 6-0 on the season. Augie Galan batted ,444 (8-for-18) with a home run for the Cubs.
Game #1: Boston 2, Chicago 1
Two of the league’s best pitchers went head-to-head and Boston’s Dave Ferriss bested Chicago’s Lon Warneke in a low-scoring contest. The Cubs scored first on Gabby Hartnett’s RBI single in the third inning. But despite having the bases loaded with no one out, they couldn’t add to their run total. In the top of the fourth, Johnny Pesky had a two-run double to put Boston ahead 2-1, and that’s how it ended. Ferriss improved to 6-0 after seven starts.

Game #2: Boston 9, Chicago 2
The Red Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Rudy York’s sacrifice fly and Dom DiMaggio’s RBI single. Rip Russell’s two-run double made it 4-0 in the fourth inning. The Cubs cut the lead in half on pinch-hitter Freddie Lindstrom’s two-run triple in the sixth inning. But Boston put it away with a five-run ninth inning, which included a two-run single from Bobby Doerr and a two-run double by York.

Game #3: Chicago 4, Boston 3
Bobby Doerr hit a two-run home run in the third inning and drew a bases-loaded walk in the fourth inning to put the Red Sox ahead 3-1. The Cubs rallied, however, as Augie Galan slugged a three-run homer to put Chicago up 4-3 in the fifth inning. The Red Sox put runners in scoring position in both the seventh and ninth innings but Cubs reliever Charlie Root was able to get them out of it and give Chicago a much-needed win.

Game #4: Boston 4, Chicago 3 (12 inn.)
The Cubs led 1-0, fell behind 2-1, then took the lead 3-2 after Frank Demaree’s sacrifice fly in the fifth inning. Boston tied it in the eighth when Rudy York led off with a triple and George Metkovich had a sacrifice fly. It stayed 3-3 until the bottom of the 12th. Johnny Pesky led off with a double and scored the game-winning run on a Bobby Doerr groundout.
