GTOP S3W8: 1937 Yankees vs. 1934 Cardinals

Every single result in week 8 went the 1937 New York Yankees’ way. Brooklyn being swept, and Chicago winning only once, meant that New York could clinch the pennant with a sweep of the bottom-dwelling 1934 St. Louis Cardinals. And sweep they did, as the Yankees won all four against the Cardinals to claim the Season 3 championship.

The Yankees (21-11) had to come from behind to win games one, two and three. In all three contests, they scored the go-ahead run in the eighth inning. They won in a rout in game four, their 10th victory in the last 12 games of the season.

New York has the bye in week 9, so although the season is over for the Yankees, the rest of the league still has to complete their schedule.

Bill Dickey hit .429 (6-for-14) with six RBI to lead the Yankees in the series. Lou Gehrig homered twice to finish the season with 11, tied with Joe DiMaggio for the league lead. Joe Medwick batted .462 (6-for-13) for the Cardinals (8-20).

Game #1: New York 2, St. Louis 1

The Cardinals got on the board in the fourth inning when Joe Medwick led off with a single and later scored on Ernie Orsatti’s RBI single. Dizzy Dean was excellent, but made one costly pitch in the eighth inning. With two outs and a runner on, Lou Gehrig hit a two-run homer to give the Yankees the lead. Spud Chandler pitched three solid innings in relief to pick up the win for New York.

Game #4: New York 11, St. Louis 4

To clinch the pennant, the Yankees left no doubt by scoring early and often, getting at least one run in six of their eight at-bats. Before the Cardinals finally scored, it was 7-0 after five innings. Bill Dickey got it started with a solo home run in the second inning. He went 4-for-4 with five RBI, also getting a two-run single in the sixth inning and RBI singles in the third and eighth innings. Tony Lazzeri had a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Lefty Gomez picked up his fifth win of the season.
