GTOP S3W8: Recap

There may still be one more week with four more series to come, but the champion of season 3 has been decided. Everything went the 1937 New York Yankees’ way in week 8 and they are the champions.

The 1935 Chicago Cubs and the 1941 Brooklyn Dodgers began the week tied for first place. But the Dodgers were swept and the Cubs managed only one win. That opened the door for the Yankees, who have the bye in week 9 and ended their season in week 8. They needed a sweep of the 1934 St. Louis Cardinals and they got it, putting the title out of reach from their nearest competitors.

Week 9 still has some importance, however. It hasn’t been completely worked out, but second-place teams may get a second chance when we get to the Champions League at the end. And, there are six teams still in the running.

Joe DiMaggio may win the batting title with his .352 mark, unless one of the three Cubs chasing him have a good week. DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig finished with 11 home runs each, and are three ahead of Philadelphia’s Jimmie Foxx.

Boston’s Dave Ferriss is the last unbeaten starting pitcher in the league. He’s 6-0 with a league-best 0.78 ERA. He and Brooklyn’s Curt Davis will both be going for a seventh win, although Davis suffered his first loss in week 8.
