GTOP S3W9: 1933 Senators vs. 1935 Cubs

Too little, too late, the 1935 Chicago Cubs won a series for the first time since week 4, taking three of four from the 1933 Washington Senators to close out the season.

The Cubs were in first place for a good portion of the season but will probably settle for second place with a 19-13 record. The Senators end up at 15-17.

Three multi-hit games pushed Frank Demaree into the lead in the batting average race heading into the finale, but he went 0-for-5 and finished at .341. Chuck Klein hit .412 (7-for-17) in the series, raising his season average to .351, but he’ll finish second to Joe DiMaggio’s .352 average. Charlie Root had a win and a save for the Cubs in relief.

Washington’s Joe Cronin hit .412 (7-for-17) with four RBI, and General Crowder had one of the best pitching performances of the season in game 3.

Game #1: Chicago 3, Washington 2

The Cubs went up 2-0 on Stan Hack’s RBI double in the second inning and Frank Demaree’s RBI single in the sixth. Larry French took a shutout to the ninth inning but the Senators put their first two runners on base. After two outs, pinch-hitter Sam Rice tied it with a two-run single. In the bottom of the ninth, Phil Cavaretta led off with a triple and he scored on Billy Jurges’ single for the walk-off win.

Game #3: Washington 2, Chicago 0

The Senators’ only win came via one of the best pitching efforts of the season, as General Crowder tossed a two-hit shutout with only one walk and one strikeout. The Cubs only had baserunners in two of their nine at-bats, and got someone to third base both times, but couldn’t bring the runner home. Washington got an RBI double from Joe Cronin in the first inning and a sacrifice fly from Joe Kuhel in the eighth. Crowder picked up his team-high fifth victory.
